NEW SHOES
Volleyball is not a gear-heavy sport, but if there is one piece of equipment that draw an emotional response from a volleyball player, it is their shoes. A volleyball-specific shoe is more important than many might think.
Here are this year’s top new offerings from the two leading volleyball shoe manufacturers, Mizuno and Nike.
Mizuno Wave Momentum 3: The most popular volleyball shoe on the market, the Momentum 3 is available in men’s (or unisex) and women’s models. Women’s models are made to fit a standard woman’s foot anatomy, which typically features lower ankle bones and insteps, and narrower mid and front foot areas. This high-end, bootie construction shoe includes Mizuno’s famous Enerzy foam midsole for unreal energy return on jumps and lateral pushes. It is also equipped with an outsole that is anti-ankle roll (thanks to an extra wide outer-foot contour), rocker-shaped and highly flexible from back to front to facilitates jumps.
Nike Zoom Hyperset 2: Even though the original Hyperset put Nike on the volleyball map as a serious contender, some weren’t enamored with the Velcro-strapped design. So, Nike made the adjustment with their Hyperset 2, which is a standard tongue-and-lace model featuring Nike’s proprietary Air Zoom midsole foam. What is unique about this shoe is the Flywire technology, a plastic lateral support that integrates with the lacing to secure the midfoot. All Nike volleyball shoes are unisex.
Mizuno Wave Sealth Neo 2: This newest model from Mizuno offers the best of both worlds. There are two main needs volleyball players look to satisfy when shopping for the right shoe: comfort and performance. Sometimes, the two can feel like they are on opposite ends of a spectrum. Some performance features can take away from a player’s comfort level. The Stealth Neo 2 is Mizuno’s attempt to hit the sweet spot of that spectrum. It is a regular tongue-and-lace shoe that features the Wave and Enerzy foam technologies, but a less stiff upper and outsole, for players who find the Momentums a little too constraining while navigating the entire width of the court.
Nike Hyperace 3: This might be the lightest volleyball shoe we carry. Nike went all out to provide the player with a comfortable, yet very functional shoe. The Hyperace still has Nike’s light Zoom Air foam, but it removed the heavier stabilizing features from the Hyperset to make this the ultimate “moonwalk” volleyball shoe. If lightness and comfort are your priority, this is the shoe for you.
TRAINING
Athletes who are serious about their sport need to train year-round. They also need a program specifically tailored to their sport of choice. The advantage of shopping at a specialized store like Volleyball Town is that you can find specialized training tools for that volleyball obsessed special someone in your life.
SKLZ Bump-N-Pass Trainer: Passing is a very important aspect of winning volleyball. Balance and connectiveness between the upper and lower body are key to consistency in a player’s passing game. The Bump-N-Pass Trainer promotes a connected passing technique by making it difficult for the player to pass using an arms-only propulsion technique, which is a recipe for wild, uncontrollable passes.
SKLZ Digging Sleeves: This tool simply makes practicing defense less painful for the player. The Digging Sleeves are padded arm sleeves that help reduce the sting to the forearms from repetitive digging reps.
Nike Fuel Jug Chugs: One important aspect of training that many tend to neglect is proper hydration. For extended play or practicing, your run-of-the-mill water bottle just isn’t enough. These BPA free, stylish Fuel Jugs come in two sizes that hold 40oz or 64oz of your favorite liquid and come in 7 different colors.
Footwear isn’t the only volleyball category Mizuno has cornered the market on. Mizuno bags are specifically aimed at volleyball players, who love to hang their paraphernalia all over the outside of their bag.
Go to any volleyball game or tournament and you’ll see many bags that look like Christmas ornaments. Water bottles, head ties, even shoes, everything is hanging out for everyone to see. The Crossover 25 does have loops for hanging, it also has inner organization options, like a large main compartment, a durable tarpaulin covered bottom shoe pouch, mesh water bottle sleeves, and an accessories/personal items zipped pocket.
Mizuno Aerostraps make it an easy to carry backpack and the padded back makes it more comfortable to lug around.
Match team colors with a choice of 5 colorways.
Some gyms are kept cooler than others, and a player may not want to warm up wearing their game uniform and shorts. The MZ1 Jogger is a super comfortable, long pant jogger made of ultra comfortable fleece fabric that is perfect for a player’s warmup session.
When the warmup is done, just loosen the drawstring and pull them off to reveal the bottom of the team uniform, and you’re ready for competition.
The pants are equipped with side seam pockets and trendy tapered leg openings and come in a choice of two colors.
MZ1 Joggers can be worn on the court, in the stands or on a lazy Sunday at home. The perfect gift to make your volleyball freak as comfortable as possible on their down time.
STOCKING STUFFERS
Of course, no Holiday shopping list would be complete without suggestions to fill-up those classic chimney ornaments.
