Mizuno’s Wave Momentum 4 volleyball shoes redefine performance with two models—Elite for maximum power and stability, Pro for agility and speed. Discover which shoe fits your game.
A fun fact you may not know is that Mizuno has been making volleyball shoes since 2003 with the introduction of the Wave Lightning. It wasn’t just another court shoe—it was a shoe specifically designed for volleyball. At the time, Mizuno’s goal was to build footwear that offered bounce, energy transfer, and support, all while staying lightweight.
That’s also when the Japanese manufacturer introduced its now-famous Wave Technology, injecting a wave-shaped layer into the midsole offering shock absorption and stability all in one. Mizuno wasn’t simply following trends; it was making a conscious effort to design volleyball footwear that would meet the needs of a rapidly evolving game.
Back then, volleyball was still considered by many equipment gurus as “just another court sport.” But the game was changing. Hitters were getting taller, verticals were getting higher, and spikes were getting harder. The Wave Lightning was Mizuno’s answer to this new level of athleticism, and it marked the beginning of the company’s volleyball-specific revolution.
THE BIRTH OF THE WAVE MOMENTUM SERIES
The next milestone came in 2019, when Mizuno launched the original Wave Momentum in Canada. This was a turning point. Mizuno introduced a volleyball shoe designed around positions and play styles, specifically for attackers.
The shoe was built to satisfy four main requirements: stability, vertical explosiveness with soft landings, forward thrust for fast approaches, and durability to handle the abrasion of constant dives, digs, and jumps. To make sure they got it right, Mizuno’s R&D team polled elite volleyball players, asking them what they needed most in their footwear.
“It’s more of a hitter’s shoe,” explains Mizuno’s Eastern Canada Sales Representative Ryan Emery. “Think of a big person, with tons of force jumping as high as possible over and over. You need lots of cushioning for jumping, a stable shoe.”
Wave Technology was instrumental in meeting these demands. The wavy foam improved arch support and shock absorption, allowing players to transfer energy more efficiently with every jump. The outsole design, meanwhile, was wider on the outside to prevent ankle rolls and flexible from heel to toe to promote smoother, rocker-like approaches.
The Dura Shield bumper at the toe gave extra protection against the abrasion of lunges and dives, while the high-end materials used in the upper’s construction ensured superior durability.
The Dynamotion bootie-style (tongueless) upper created a snug, ergonomic fit. The intricate eyelet design also provided customizable lacing for extra support and comfort.
The result was a shoe unlike anything volleyball players had worn before.
MOMENTUM 2 AND 3: INNOVATION IN MOTION
Mizuno continued refining the formula. The Wave Momentum 2 introduced Enerzy Foam to the heel, giving players lighter cushioning with extra bounce. The Momentum 3 expanded this innovation across the entire length of the shoe, from heel to toe—even including the sock liner—and paired it with XG Rubber on the outsole for even more grip.
Each generation pushed the design further, making the shoe lighter, grippier, and more explosive, while staying true to its identity as a volleyball-specific shoe for serious players.
So, what does this fourth iteration of Wave Momentum have in store for volleyball’s next generation of stars?
How about TWO new Momentum models?
WAVE MOMENTUM 4: A NEW ERA IN VOLLEYBALL FOOTWEAR
Mizuno has taken things even further with the Wave Momentum 4 series. For the first time, the Momentum is available in two different models: the Wave Momentum 4 Elite and the Wave Momentum 4 Pro.
“Even though the Momentum is the (ultimate) hitter’s shoe, some still prefer a traditional shoe,” says Emery. And that’s exactly why Mizuno created two versions of the new Momentum—to meet the needs of different players and positions.
Elite volleyball players all want the best in technological advancements when selecting their most important piece of gear—the footwear. However, not all of them are looking for the grippiest and most bouncy shoes on the market.
Mizuno took that into consideration when developing their Wave Momentum 4 line, one that consists of the ELITE and PRO models.
Wave Momentum 4 Elite – Maximum Performance
The Momentum 4 Elite is Mizuno’s most advanced volleyball shoe yet. It represents the continuation of the classic Momentum family.
“Enerzy XP throughout (midsole and insole), super stable, XG Rubber on the outsole,” states Emery about the Momentum 4 Elite’s main components. The outsole uses XG Rubber for unmatched grip, while the Dyna-Heel Lock system improves ankle and heel alignment for more stability.
A noticeable change is the new Dynamotion half-bootie construction. Emery explains: “The full bootie is awesome for keeping the tongue in place and for a snug fit but is not so great for being easy to put on.”
The new half-bootie solves that problem by combining a snug, sock-like fit through the foot with a wider opening at the ankle, making the shoe easier to wear without sacrificing performance – the best of both worlds!
With Dura Shield toe protection and a refined construction, the Elite is aimed at hitters, middle blockers, and taller players who rely on repeated jumping and need maximum support.
Wave Momentum 4 Pro – Lightweight Agility for Defensive Players
The Momentum 4 Pro offers a different experience. It still uses Mizuno’s Enerzy foam, but only in the heel, creating a lighter feel with a lower ride height.
“It has Enerzy foam, but not as much (as the Elite),” says Emery. “It’s lower, closer to the court, not as bouncy.”
This design makes the Pro ideal for liberos, setters, and defensive specialists who move quickly around the court and don’t jump as often as attackers. The outsole is based on the original Momentum, offering smooth traction with a little less grip, which defensive players may prefer.
Without the Elite’s Dura Shield bumper, the Pro uses a toe-wrap outsole for abrasion resistance, reducing overall weight by about 10 grams per shoe.
“Think of a libero or defensive positions who may like a little less sticky feel when cutting,” adds Emery.
ELITE VS PRO: WHICH WAVE MOMENTUM 4 IS RIGHT FOR YOU?
The Momentum 4 Elite is designed for hitters and taller athletes who need maximum support, bounce, and stability. The Momentum 4 Pro caters to defensive specialists and players who prioritize agility, speed, and a lighter shoe with a closer-to-the-court feel.
Of course, these are not strict rules. Some attackers may prefer the Pro’s agility, while some defensive players may opt for the Elite’s grip and cushioning. Mizuno’s goal was to create versatile options so that every player can find a shoe that fits their game and personal preferences.
MIZUNO AND THE FUTURE OF VOLLEYBALL FOOTWEAR
Volleyball continues to evolve into a faster and more athletic sport, and Mizuno has consistently led the way in volleyball shoe innovation. From the Wave Lightning to the Wave Momentum 4 Elite and Pro, the brand has shown a commitment to designing footwear that enhances performance and caters to the specific needs of each position.
Whether you’re a power hitter demanding explosiveness or a libero focused on quick reactions, the Mizuno Wave Momentum 4 series offers a model built for your style of play.
